New Second Life Knowlege Base migration completed

October 20, 2009 Daniel Voyager Leave a comment

Linden Lab announced yesterday on the Official Second Life Blog, that the KB has been moved to the new Second Life Wiki home (Knowlege Base) and that the migration phrase has now been completed. CLICK HERE to visit the new KB wiki. Thanks to the Doc Team for their hard work they have put into this over recent months. :D

It’s official: Our Knowledge Base (KB) has been moved to the Second Life Wiki! Now that our massive migration is complete, we can offer several tremendous, hands-on benefits to improve your knowledge-seeking and knowledge-sharing experience, including:

  • Direct linking–at long last! The link you see is what you copy and paste to share helpful articles with others. It’s that simple.|
  • Unified help resource! When the KB and the Wiki existed in two different places, some were confused over where to look for help. Viva la unification! Now there’s just one place to find everything you need.
  • Link hotlist integration! Have a few articles that you refer to over and over again? Take a few minutes to make a Wiki page, link to those on-Wiki pages, and then share it with others with similar needs.
  • Robust internationalization! The Wiki is already used by numerous volunteers to provide translated versions of KB articles. Multibyte character encoding support, which our previous system didn’t have, means that languages like Japanese and others with extended characters will be retained as intended.
  • Accelerated article revision time! The team effort makes updates a breeze. Not only does wikifying the KB make it easier for us to release content updates, but you can also review articles for even faster dissemination of information. Heck, if you spot a mistake, you can correct it in minutes or even seconds.

What do you think of the new Second Life Knowlege Base ?

Philip Rosedale leaves Linden Lab and moves on

October 16, 2009 Daniel Voyager Leave a comment

Philip Rosedale (Philip Linden) announced yesterday on the Official Second Life Blog his Next Chapter, that he will be starting a new company and that he will no longer be working full-time at Linden Lab anymore. Philip Rosedale will still be a chariman of Linden Lab and he will still do media conferences about Second Life.  M Linden (Mark Kindon) became the new CEO of Linden Lab about one year and a half ago when Philip Linden stepped down as CEO.

I’m starting a new company, and wanted to let you know.

I will still be chairman, as I have been since leaving the job as CEO.  The change is that I’m not going to be working full-time at Linden Lab anymore (some of you might have thought I wasn’t still there, but actually I have been!).  I’ll still be doing the same outbound and media type things as before – talking about Second Life, etc.

We’re now at a place where I feel really comfortable that Second Life and Linden Lab are OK without me being here day to day anymore.

M (and others) have also managed to hire a bunch of diverse, smart, passionate people who I feel can very capably lead the company.

And as for all of you – the people all over the world who have built Second Life – you all feel very near and dear to me, and I want you to be a part of this next adventure.  I can’t say enough, or say thank you enough, about the experience that has been watching Second Life come to life.   On a personal level, it has deeply changed me.  I am a different and better person, in part through the experience of being in Second Life with all of you.   So anyway… I’ll keep you posted, as I get things more sorted out

I wish Philip good luck on his new adventures. So I guess now the full attention is now pointing towards M Linden to carry us through into the distant future of Second Life.  This was a big shock to many and I really do admire what Philip has done over recent years and of course bring us Second Life.  But with all things everything has to end sometime and move on at some point.

Second Life Answers Status Levels

SL Answer Points

—————————————————————-

Second Life Answers Key Levels

Levels Replies/Points

Newbie = 0 -100
Novice = 101 – 500
Apprentice501 – 1500
Expert = 1501 – 3000
Master = 3001-1000

^^ Subject to change ^^

—————————————————————-

When answering questions for residents on Second Life Answers, you might of noticed that there is a points bar located under your picture. I currently have 29 points which is at the low end newbie level. I have recently found out the rest of the status level include Novice, Apprentice, Expert and Master levels.

By default, for example, Clearspace includes the following status levels: master (501-1000 points); junior (101-500 points); newbie (0-100 points).

This is very similar to Yahoo Answers points and levels system, which ranges from 1-249 to 26, 000+ points. There are other ways to get help and feedback in Second Life including using the SL Forums, SL Blogs, SL social networking sites and getting help by someone in-world. You can also receive points on the Commerce Forums for answering questions which is very neat.

A few things to remember

  • Participation and contributions really do count on Second Life Answers. Being Helpful is key!
  • Second Life Answers is not a competition or getting points and awards as such.
  • There’s no competition in helping people and providing answers.
  • If you want to challenge yourself, feel free to do that!

Second Life Answers

The best way to keep Second Life Answers as a good resource is for those who ask questions to remember to mark responses as helpful or correct.  After trying out the responses, you will know which ones to pick and this will make it more helpful for the next Resident looking at the same type question!

Yahoo Answers

To encourage participation and reward great answers

Levels are another way to keep track of how active you (and others) have been. The more points you accumulate, the higher your level. Yahoo! Answers recognizes your level achievements with our special brand of thank you’s!

And finally, as you attain higher levels, you’ll also be able to contribute more to Yahoo! Answers – you can ask, answer, vote and rate more frequently.

Some will think the status levels is a good thing to have, while others might be upset and agrey with having a points/levels system At the end of the day volunteering makes all the difference in Second Life and making sure everyone has that all important information to enjoy their Second Life to the full.

What do you think about Second Life Answers status levels ?

Good thing or bad thing ? Why?

New details released that the Second Life Forums will be merged and that it will be the same layout (style) of the new SL website and XStreet SL. From whats been said recently there will be a announcement within a week. So it will be all new and improved very soon.

There have been alot of new changes this year already including the new Second Life Blog, Second Life website, SL Dashboard, SL Answers and next in the pipe line is SL Forums. Most residents love the new changes where the others don’t like the new changes at all. In the near future we can expect new changes to the Second Life user-interface and the new installation layout including additional new changes to the new user experience. We will have to wait and see! :D

New Citizens Inc Blog comes back online

September 14, 2009 Daniel Voyager Leave a comment

After many weeks of being offline, the New Citizens Inc from Second Life is back and bigger than ever before. I’ve been returning over the last few weeks to the site and I’m seeing alot of good progress being made. The NCI Web Services team has introduced new forums and its worth checking that out, CLICK HERE.The New Citizens Inc group in-world has over 9, 547 group members and its growing all the time. NCI is one of the biggest, well known groups in the Second Life community. If your interested in helping with the NCI blog, check out the latest post called Open Casting for NCI Bloggers! or contact Lethe Naumova in-world.

New Citizen’s Inc. Your Portal to Second Life

The three columns to the right are for our Classes and Events, Second Life, and our community, in that order. You’ll find class schedules and news, Second Life news and grid news, and lots of links to both NCI stuff and SL stuff.

NCI calls itself “Your Portal to Second Life”, and I like to think of this blog as “Your Portal to NCI” (which makes it “Your Portal to  Your Portal to Second Life”

If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions about that kind of thing, be sure to wander over to the forums and post them there!

SLCC09 starts today

Today marks the 5th Second Life Community Convention and this year it will take place in San Francisco, CA.  The Second Life Community Convention will be hosted by Second Life residents for a real life gathering. I would love to go but its too far away and plus the costs ontop. I believe there will be SLCC regions open for residents to watch the live coverage of the convention.

    SL Volunteer Info Updated

    I’m a SL Mentor in Second Life and I love mentoring new residents at HI’s, OI’s and at help points around SL. I first applied for the mentoring program back in 2007 and since then it’s been great and still is. Over the past year or so many residents have been asking about when LL will open up the volunteer applications for new SL Mentors again and I have linked them to the volunteer section on the Second Life website. In recent months the same message was shown (July 2008 info) untill June/July 2009 where there seems to be hope for new mentors, as there will be new info coming out on the SL blog very soon. Earlier this year LL shut down the TSL Mentoring program and their TSL Volunteer Island was removed. Here are some recent statistics on members in the SL Mentors group and it shows a big decrease since late 2008.

    SL Mentoring Stats 2009

    26th October 2008

    Starting with approximately 3,700 mentors, roughly 1,700 went through the renewal process. This far exceeded Linden Lab’s expectations for renewals, which were anticipated to only range from about 350 to a little under a thousand, based on observations of volunteer activity. From SL Massively

    Volunteer Info
    In our continuing effort to make the Second Life Volunteer program the finest in Second Life, we have adopted new processing steps for Apprentice mentors to advance from Apprentice to full Mentor. Recently, our application processing rate has dropped to accommodate these changes. Rather than let the application list grow at its present pace and force residents who desire to participate in the Volunteer program to wait weeks if not months to hear from us, we have decided to stop accepting applications until we have processed the list of residents currently in the pipeline. Thank you for your patience.
    The Second Life Volunteer Team

    As of 15th July 2009 – Latest Update!

    Thanks for your interest! We are currently not accepting new applications for the Second Life Mentor group. Please watch the Second Life blog for updates and more information.

    - The Second Life Volunteer Team

    Sounds like VTeam or someone at Linden Lab will be making announcement’s soon on the SL Blog and VTeam blog for SL Mentors in the coming weeks or even months. Hopefully the announcement will include details about accepting new mentors into the SL Mentor groups or related. Hopefully this will jump start the group again into a successfull future.

    The recent update by the VTeam was this Volunteers are staying busy! by Lexie Linden.

    Second Life’s 6th Birthday event is a prime example of volunteers in action. 80-90 Mentors volunteered their time and skills for this very popular event.

    In the coming months, we will be looking into additional  ways that volunteers can come together to help and inspire new Residents as well as seasoned members of the Second Life community.   We will update you after  these ideas become better defined.  Stay tuned…

    When there are new updates I’ll post them here.
    If you have any feedback on this recent update to volunteer info, feel free to comment.
