My 3rd Rez Day in Second Life

October 31, 2009 Daniel Voyager 3 comments

Today (31/10/09) marks my 3rd year Rez Day in Second Life. 3 years have passed by and I have loved every moment of it. In days that’s 1095 days old in SL since I first registered for (TSL) = SL back on 31st October 2006. I transferred to the Main Grid last December and since then it’s been awesome.  I love this time of year because it’s Halloween and it’s lot’s of fun  in SL. I still ask myself the question why I registered on Halloween, hahahaha. Perhaps you could tell me? *giggles*

Thanks to my friends, fans and everybody else for following my adventures over the years. I love you all! :D

3rd year SL anniversary celebrations start now!

    Philip Rosedale leaves Linden Lab and moves on

    October 16, 2009 Daniel Voyager Leave a comment

    Philip Rosedale (Philip Linden) announced yesterday on the Official Second Life Blog his Next Chapter, that he will be starting a new company and that he will no longer be working full-time at Linden Lab anymore. Philip Rosedale will still be a chariman of Linden Lab and he will still do media conferences about Second Life.  M Linden (Mark Kindon) became the new CEO of Linden Lab about one year and a half ago when Philip Linden stepped down as CEO.

    I’m starting a new company, and wanted to let you know.

    I will still be chairman, as I have been since leaving the job as CEO.  The change is that I’m not going to be working full-time at Linden Lab anymore (some of you might have thought I wasn’t still there, but actually I have been!).  I’ll still be doing the same outbound and media type things as before – talking about Second Life, etc.

    We’re now at a place where I feel really comfortable that Second Life and Linden Lab are OK without me being here day to day anymore.

    M (and others) have also managed to hire a bunch of diverse, smart, passionate people who I feel can very capably lead the company.

    And as for all of you – the people all over the world who have built Second Life – you all feel very near and dear to me, and I want you to be a part of this next adventure.  I can’t say enough, or say thank you enough, about the experience that has been watching Second Life come to life.   On a personal level, it has deeply changed me.  I am a different and better person, in part through the experience of being in Second Life with all of you.   So anyway… I’ll keep you posted, as I get things more sorted out

    I wish Philip good luck on his new adventures. So I guess now the full attention is now pointing towards M Linden to carry us through into the distant future of Second Life.  This was a big shock to many and I really do admire what Philip has done over recent years and of course bring us Second Life.  But with all things everything has to end sometime and move on at some point.

    New changes to SL Showcase tab

    Showcase - All

    Recently I’ve discovered there used to be 6 tabs (March 2009) for Showcase but now there seems to be 7 (September/October 2009). Some main categories have been renamed and some have been replaced with new ones. I really love spending time exploring these exciting locations and the showcase tab really does have alot to offer everyone. Before the Showcase tab was the old popular places tab where it showed a list of places with a traffic count for each.

    The Showcase tab in SEARCH displays popular best inworld locations of interest to exisitng and new residents of Second Life. You will see a list of interesting and cool places to visit in Second Life. This is AWESOME! :D

    These are spots that have been identified by Linden Research as interesting places to visit. Showcase is split up into 7 category tabs: All, Arts & Recreation, Educationa & Nonprofit, Business & Enterprise, Help & Learn, Music and Hot Spots. Click on a blue landmark link then it will show information and a picture about that landmark in Second Life on the left. Click on Teleport to visit that cool showcase attraction. :)

    SEARCH > SHOWCASE!

    Try it out for yourself and have fun!

    Second Life Answers Status Levels

    October 5, 2009 Daniel Voyager 2 comments

    SL Answer Points

    —————————————————————-

    Second Life Answers Key Levels

    Levels Replies/Points

    Newbie = 0 -100
    Novice = 101 – 500
    Apprentice501 – 1500
    Expert = 1501 – 3000
    Master = 3001-1000

    ^^ Subject to change ^^

    —————————————————————-

    When answering questions for residents on Second Life Answers, you might of noticed that there is a points bar located under your picture. I currently have 29 points which is at the low end newbie level. I have recently found out the rest of the status level include Novice, Apprentice, Expert and Master levels.

    By default, for example, Clearspace includes the following status levels: master (501-1000 points); junior (101-500 points); newbie (0-100 points).

    This is very similar to Yahoo Answers points and levels system, which ranges from 1-249 to 26, 000+ points. There are other ways to get help and feedback in Second Life including using the SL Forums, SL Blogs, SL social networking sites and getting help by someone in-world. You can also receive points on the Commerce Forums for answering questions which is very neat.

    A few things to remember

    • Participation and contributions really do count on Second Life Answers. Being Helpful is key!
    • Second Life Answers is not a competition or getting points and awards as such.
    • There’s no competition in helping people and providing answers.
    • If you want to challenge yourself, feel free to do that!
    • How to Participate in Second Life Answers
    • Second Life Blog and Forum FAQ

    Second Life Answers

    The best way to keep Second Life Answers as a good resource is for those who ask questions to remember to mark responses as helpful or correct.  After trying out the responses, you will know which ones to pick and this will make it more helpful for the next Resident looking at the same type question!

    Yahoo Answers

    To encourage participation and reward great answers

    Levels are another way to keep track of how active you (and others) have been. The more points you accumulate, the higher your level. Yahoo! Answers recognizes your level achievements with our special brand of thank you’s!

    And finally, as you attain higher levels, you’ll also be able to contribute more to Yahoo! Answers – you can ask, answer, vote and rate more frequently.

    Some will think the status levels is a good thing to have, while others might be upset and agrey with having a points/levels system At the end of the day volunteering makes all the difference in Second Life and making sure everyone has that all important information to enjoy their Second Life to the full.

    What do you think about Second Life Answers status levels ?

    Good thing or bad thing ? Why?

    Storing Second Life Incident Reports, September 2009 Stats

    September 26, 2009 Daniel Voyager Leave a comment

    Tyche Shepherd reports on storing Second Life Incident Reports and she has published many awesome graphs of her findings on sluniverse.com called what did the naughty people do?. There is alot of interesting data and information in this thread. It’s worth checking out.

    There is an Official LL Incident Report page on the SL website which displays the top 25 recent disciplinary actions taken by the in-world Goverance Team. Don’t forget to go to the Help menu and Choose Report Abuse to report incidents etc always!

    In total I now have data which seems complete from 7th Jun 2007 up to the current time, at the moment this comes to 21, 665 published incidents.

    Firstly I should point out published Incident Reports are only those AR’s which have been resolved and where a warning or suspension has been made. It doesn’t seem to cover bans or suspensions due to account issues or the other strange reasons Lindens use to suspend people.They also cover Teen Grid as well as the Main Grid.

    Big fall in published incident reports at the beginning of this year.

    There are 91 unique types of violations in total, the most common was Community Standard: Assault, Scripted Objects which covers 3654 incidents

    Very little suprises with Public Help Islands, Sandboxes and Info-bubs dominating the list, with No Specific Region being the most common. Help Island Public hosts over 4% of all published incidents.

    52% of published incidents result in a Warning, the rest in a suspension of 1 to 14 days.

    There were only 2 published copyright infringement violations which resulted in a ban of 14 days (there were 17 in total across the period)

    I must stress that these figures are only the Published Incident Reports, people say there are plenty of resolved AR’s which don’t make the Blotter and they certainly don’t include any bans which do occur or suspensions for other reasons (account issues, activity which triggers money laundering detection etc) so it’s difficult to draw concrete conclusions about the whole AR process from them .

    Great job, interesting stats. :)

    Now over to you, what do you think about the graph data ?

    Former TG regions, groups, cool places on the MG

    September 17, 2009 Daniel Voyager Leave a comment

    This is a quick easy guide for TG residents transferring very soon to the Main Grid or Teens that have already celebrated their 18th birthday in Second Life. There are regions which are former-TG regions that have been moved over and created on the Main Grid. There are many popular former-TG created TSL groups on the Main Grid to join which are either free to join or ask for a invite for. There are guides located around Baffin to click on to find out about what the MG has to offer. Note: 13-17yrs should be on the TG and 18+ on the MG.

    If you are teen on the TG and turning 18 years old shortly, you will need to send a support ticket to transfer to the MG, send in your ID, LL will review your ticket, and you will be transferred on your birthday. When you arrive your groups, friends list and landmarks will be automatically removed/deleted. Your inventory transfers over with you along with your L$. It’s going to be hard leaving your friends behind and you can always keep in contact through messenger services etc.Baffin
