New Second Life Knowlege Base migration completed

October 20, 2009 Daniel Voyager Leave a comment

Linden Lab announced yesterday on the Official Second Life Blog, that the KB has been moved to the new Second Life Wiki home (Knowlege Base) and that the migration phrase has now been completed. CLICK HERE to visit the new KB wiki. Thanks to the Doc Team for their hard work they have put into this over recent months. :D

It’s official: Our Knowledge Base (KB) has been moved to the Second Life Wiki! Now that our massive migration is complete, we can offer several tremendous, hands-on benefits to improve your knowledge-seeking and knowledge-sharing experience, including:

  • Direct linking–at long last! The link you see is what you copy and paste to share helpful articles with others. It’s that simple.|
  • Unified help resource! When the KB and the Wiki existed in two different places, some were confused over where to look for help. Viva la unification! Now there’s just one place to find everything you need.
  • Link hotlist integration! Have a few articles that you refer to over and over again? Take a few minutes to make a Wiki page, link to those on-Wiki pages, and then share it with others with similar needs.
  • Robust internationalization! The Wiki is already used by numerous volunteers to provide translated versions of KB articles. Multibyte character encoding support, which our previous system didn’t have, means that languages like Japanese and others with extended characters will be retained as intended.
  • Accelerated article revision time! The team effort makes updates a breeze. Not only does wikifying the KB make it easier for us to release content updates, but you can also review articles for even faster dissemination of information. Heck, if you spot a mistake, you can correct it in minutes or even seconds.

Philip Rosedale leaves Linden Lab and moves on

October 16, 2009 Daniel Voyager Leave a comment

Philip Rosedale (Philip Linden) announced yesterday on the Official Second Life Blog his Next Chapter, that he will be starting a new company and that he will no longer be working full-time at Linden Lab anymore. Philip Rosedale will still be a chariman of Linden Lab and he will still do media conferences about Second Life.  M Linden (Mark Kindon) became the new CEO of Linden Lab about one year and a half ago when Philip Linden stepped down as CEO.

I’m starting a new company, and wanted to let you know.

I will still be chairman, as I have been since leaving the job as CEO.  The change is that I’m not going to be working full-time at Linden Lab anymore (some of you might have thought I wasn’t still there, but actually I have been!).  I’ll still be doing the same outbound and media type things as before – talking about Second Life, etc.

We’re now at a place where I feel really comfortable that Second Life and Linden Lab are OK without me being here day to day anymore.

M (and others) have also managed to hire a bunch of diverse, smart, passionate people who I feel can very capably lead the company.

And as for all of you – the people all over the world who have built Second Life – you all feel very near and dear to me, and I want you to be a part of this next adventure.  I can’t say enough, or say thank you enough, about the experience that has been watching Second Life come to life.   On a personal level, it has deeply changed me.  I am a different and better person, in part through the experience of being in Second Life with all of you.   So anyway… I’ll keep you posted, as I get things more sorted out

I wish Philip good luck on his new adventures. So I guess now the full attention is now pointing towards M Linden to carry us through into the distant future of Second Life.  This was a big shock to many and I really do admire what Philip has done over recent years and of course bring us Second Life.  But with all things everything has to end sometime and move on at some point.

Second Life Knowledge Base Wiki

Over the past week or so Linden Lab (Documentation Team) have been working around the clock transferring articles from the old KB to the new Second Life knowledge base wiki. Earlier in the year the Documenation Team set up the KB2Wiki project which involved testing the Wiki and reviewing pages. Success!

Our mission: Test the Wiki as the new home of the KB so you get more accurate information, easier.

Summary: We’re testing using this Second Life Wiki as the new home of the Second Life Knowledge Base (KB for short) by moving a small selection of Beginners’ articles into the Wiki. Our ultimate goal is to unify the KB with the Wiki, two of the main places you might go for Second Life help. Together, we can improve the accuracy, completeness, and range of information available to all Residents — and make all of this information easier to find and use!

The Documentation Team have apparently important all KB articles and are now working on cleanup/organization phrase of the process. I love the new Second Life Knowlege Base wiki, easier to search for things and looks great visually etc.

This Wiki is our new home, so pardon us while the dust settles.

Welcome to the Knowlege Base, the official source for Second Life help & related information.

The Knowledge Base contains articles that are quality-reviewed by Linden Lab and Resident Reviewers. The Wiki has long-thrived as Resident-powered help, and it stands to benefit from documentation which wields the dual advantages of being: (1) officially approved by Linden Lab while at the same time (2) is updated quicker by having more eyes on editable content.

When you first visit the new Second Life Knowlege Base it will show the following things;

  • Introduction part - top of the page
  • How do I find stuff? - middle
  • Questions & Answers - bottom half -
  • To Do – at the bottom
  • Knowlege Base FAQ
  • Check Q&A at the bottom of the page for details of the new changes

Questions:

  • What do you think of the new Second Life Knowlege Base wiki ?
  • What would you like to see in the near future ?

After many weeks of being offline, the New Citizens Inc from Second Life is back and bigger than ever before. I’ve been returning over the last few weeks to the site and I’m seeing alot of good progress being made. The NCI Web Services team has introduced new forums and its worth checking that out, CLICK HERE.The New Citizens Inc group in-world has over 9, 547 group members and its growing all the time. NCI is one of the biggest, well known groups in the Second Life community. If your interested in helping with the NCI blog, check out the latest post called Open Casting for NCI Bloggers! or contact Lethe Naumova in-world.

New Citizen’s Inc. Your Portal to Second Life

The three columns to the right are for our Classes and Events, Second Life, and our community, in that order. You’ll find class schedules and news, Second Life news and grid news, and lots of links to both NCI stuff and SL stuff.

NCI calls itself “Your Portal to Second Life”, and I like to think of this blog as “Your Portal to NCI” (which makes it “Your Portal to  Your Portal to Second Life”

If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions about that kind of thing, be sure to wander over to the forums and post them there!

Give this a try…

http://secondlife.com/support/systest.php

System Requirements Lab analyzes your computer in just seconds, and it’s FREE. Checks all your system to see if you need to update stuff, etc.

System Requirements Lab looks at your computer’s hardware and system software to determine whether or not your current system can run a product. Each of your computer’s components is evaluated to see how well it meets the minimum and recommended requirements for specific products. Recommendations are made on how to update or upgrade each component which does not meet the listed requirements. Sometimes it is a simple free software download and sometimes it is a link to a product such as the right video card.

Extra: Can You RUN It?

Please note this might not work with some OS systems and internet browsers.

Check out the Second Life Wiki Statistics which includes Page statistics, Edit statistics, User statistics, View statistics and Most viewed pages. Just recently the wiki passed the 7,000 articles created mark which is great. Second Life wiki is great because it can be edited by any resident and Linden. Enjoy!

Linden Bear locations in Second Life

September 3, 2009 Daniel Voyager 7 comments

Top 5 Locations to find Linden Bears in Second Life. Don’t forget you can always IM Lindens for their Linden Bears or why not visit LL Office Hours and ask for them for it there. Residents have also been creating Bears over the years. I have created my own Bear and you can IM me if you would like a copy of it. Before I transferred to the MG (December 2008) there were a couple of Linden Bears around Meiji West region in TSL. Again there was no Linden Bear museums on the Teen Grid and there were about 5-10 Lindens that actually did any Office Hours during 2007-2008.  With that said, Let’s exchange bears! :D

Many Lindens of the past and present have their own personal and unique teddy bear to share with Residents who ask them for it. Most of these Linden Bears are modifications of the Linden Bear made by Nicole Linden, which can be seen on the right. This article lists an incomplete list of these Linden Bears.
