Linden Lab Testing a new home page

December 16, 2008 Daniel Voyager 1 comment

Linden Lab, announced yesterday, on the Official Second Life Blog, that they are currently testing  a new design home page for the Second Life website, WooooT. Linden Lab plans to roll this out over the course of the next week. This “is a small first step towards a larger redesign of the Second Life experience”. The live new page will be pushed out for a few hours next week, apparently. So keep a eye-out for a new look :)

New design features

 • “The design is optimized for the new user coming to secondlife.com for the first time and not logged in. The logged in homepage (which is what most Residents, as opposed to potential Residents see) will not be changing.”
 •  The new page will be “an example of the kinds of projects (small in scope, new user friendly, utilizing outside design resources from Big Spaceship)”.
 • “The core of the design is a nine-pod layout and a carousel of pods that can be “flicked” from left to right to reveal additional pods. This is allows a potential Resident to see a wide range of experiences available to them.”

Upcoming

 • “In addition to the homepage, we’ve been working to improve the registration experience for new user. In the coming weeks, we’ll be introducing localized registration for all new users, including the option for new sign-ups to select a first landing location in their language- thanks to the Community Gateway Program.”
 • “We plan to continue improvements to increase the numbers of new Residents, so stay tuned.”

Your Feedback

 • Linden Lab wants to hear your feedback and suggestions if possible. You can do this by logging into the SL Forums and find the related post to this new design. Only Main Grid residents can access this, :(.

My Feedback

Personally, I think that this is a good start to improve new user experience and make resident experiences better, both in-world on on the website. However, there are still no screen shots of the design?, which would be good to see. There was no mention on improving new resident experience for Teen Grid or when the Teen Grid website will be upgraded or worked on again?. It seems to be aimed at the Main Grid all the time and TG residents don’t get a say at all. I’ve noticed the recent blog posts made in the past few months on the Official Second Life have been “blocked” for Teen Grid residents to have their say and feedback on posts.

My suggestions

 • The Teen Grid Website needs to be upgraded, like now! (last updated 2005)
 • There should be a link on the official second life blog posts to the TSL Forums, then you would get TG resident feedback on new Linden Lab projects.
 • There should be more official second life blog posts made about Teen Second Life. We need coverage too! :)

If this can be done in the future at some point, it would be fantastic.

One week remaining until I transfer to the Main Grid.

I have submitted a support ticket to Linden Lab about turning 18 and I’m now waiting for futher information. For folks that don’t know already, I’ll be transfering to the Main Grid on Saturday 20th of December 2008. I’m looking forward next weeks parties in TSL and when I transfer I can’t wait to meet new friends, explore and help as much as possible. I’m going to miss the Teen Grid sooooo much and I’ll be saying my final goodbyes, doing final tours and enjoying my final last moments on the grid. I’ll be also sadly stepping down from many groups and land management systems, next week on the Teen Grid to let new people take over and make a difference for the TG community.

TSL November Metrics – Teen usage hours increase

December 12, 2008 Daniel Voyager Leave a comment

Today, the new Second Life November 2008 metrics was released on the Second Life Massively page. Last month shows an increase of usage hours for the Teen Grid  from 0.29% in September 2008 to 0.32% for November 2008, which means more teens in TSL playing for longer. We can hopefully expect teen usage hours to rise, even futher for December 2008. I estimate it will rise from 0.32% to somewhere between 0.35 to 0.40 this month. We will have to wait until 2009 to find out. haha

===================================

Below, shows statistics of the Teen Grid metrics between August 2008 to November 2008.

===================================

August 2008

Usage hours by Age Band
  % of Total Hrs
13-17 (Teen Grid) 0.53%

September 2008

Usage hours by Age Band
  % of Total Hrs
13-17 (Teen Grid) 0.29%

October 2008

The percentage of user-hours consumed by users under 25 fell during October to 14.96% (including Teen Second Life).

Check out my previous post on Teen Grid Metrics

November 2008 – NEW

The percentage of user-hours consumed by users under 25 rose slightly to 15.39% (including Teen Second Life).

TSL Breaking News: Teen Second Life Manager steps down “kkthxbai!1″

December 10, 2008 Daniel Voyager Leave a comment

Blue Linden, has just released new details today on the TSL Forums under the  TSL Announcements section, saying he will no longer be in the “Teen Second Life Manager” position for the Teen Grid anymore, which is really sad news.

Blue Linden has been a awesome Teen Second Life Manager since 2005, in (beta). I think everyone would agree with that, everyone loves Blue. http://forums.secondlife.com/showthread.php?t=296969

kkthxbai!1

Change is the nature of Second Life. Over the years we’ve seen Teen Second Life grow from 6 individuals, to thousands and from a few mainland regions to scores of sims, with dozens of islands run by non-profits, educators and entrepreneurial teens. In time it was no longer possible for me to handle certain tasks like land management and support for TSL expanded to include numerous lindens and teams like the Linden Land Gurus. Eventually this became the case with all teen-related issues…to the point where today there are no longer any TSL tasks on my schedule.

And so, just as no single Linden runs the main grid, there is no single Linden that runs the teen grid, and no need for the position “Teen Second Life Manager”. Eliminating this position is primarily a clerical change and will not represent a significant or even noticeable difference for teen residents. Lindens still host office hours on TSL (catch me at 4 on Thursdays in Meiji West!) and of course, I’ll still be advocating for teen residents here at the Lab and will still be available at blue@lindenlab.com when not inworld.

As I’m sure you know, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed being able to call myself the “teen grid guy” and work so closely with such an amazingly smart, talented, and creative group of residents these past several years. Just don’t forget me after you’ve taken over the world
